The fun to drive compact german hatchback returned to the north american market in 2010 to replace the rabbit, a name that was revived in north america back in 2006 for the then new mkv hatchback version of the jetta. Standard safety features on all models include, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, tire pressure monitoring and six airbags. Tdi models are extra equipped with features such as sport suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels/tires, leather steering wheel and shift knob, touch-screen 6-disc audio system with sirius and floor mats. Redesigned with sleeker styling, improved fuel mileage. introductionthe volkswagen tiguan has been substantially revised for 2012. Designed for an active sporty lifestyle, the 2012 tiguan delivers excellent performance on the road or over rugged terrain. This engine has been around a long time and it's brilliant, now making 200 horsepower and 207 foot-pounds of torque at a low 1700 rpm. we found acceleration snappy and silky, while the engine is smooth and silent at high speeds, where the chassis is stable. The tiguan se delivers a nice balance between smooth ride quality and stability at high speeds. Volkswagen says tiguan is the gti of compact suvs. tiguan comes standard with front-wheel drive, but we highly recommend opting for the excellent 4motion all-wheel drive. fuel mileage is decent, earning an epa-rated 21/27 mpg city/highway, an increase of 2 mpg over the previous (pre-2012) tiguan, thanks largely to a taller sixth-gear ratio in the 6-speed automatic transmission, and lower-rpm shift points. These things are possible because of the engine's excellent torque, while making the driving dynamic smoother. The interior materials are of a high quality, especially the v-tex leatherette, which we couldn't tell from real leather. We recommend the optional navigation system for its clarity and ease of use. volkswagen says that the tiguan's main rivals are the chevrolet equinox, ford escape, honda cr-v, hyundai santa fe, nissan rogue, subaru forester, and toyota rav4. in addition to about 400 miles on the road, we drove the tiguan at an event in the northwest called mudfest, where it competed in the compact suv class against a honda cr-v, kia sportage, mazda cx-5, mini countryman, nissan juke, and subaru impreza. Tiguan sel with premium navigation 34,995) includes an upgraded navigation system with a 6. 5-inch color high-resolution touchscreen display, integrated 30gb hard drive, and voice control. It's a nice size, 174 inches long, 71 inches wide and 66 inches tall, which volkswagen calls the perfect size for city dwelling and country living. We won't be wisecrackers and suggest that if that's true, then every other volkswagen is either too big or too small for city or country living. Then again, maybe we will. the windshield is lightly raked, the beltline creeps up almost imperceptibly. The side windows that appear bigger than they are because of black frames. There's not much shape at the rear, with a thick c-pillar that's nearly vertical; meanwhile, the rear glass tapers a bit toward the roof, where there's a small spoiler, mounted on the glass not the roof, so it doesn't look like the tiguan is trying to be racy. unlike many suvs, even compacts, the tailgate doesn't look big and flat, because it's not. A ridge runs back from the squared-off rear wheel arches, and wraps around the tailgate; imagine rainwater rolling down the rear glass, shooting off that ridge and flying rearward. The teardrop taillights add to the tidy back end, by not being blocky or radical; plus, hooray, they're totally red: no clear, no white, no chrome. the front overhang is short, and there's one clean horizontal swipe that makes up the grille and headlamps, sweeping slightly upward around the corners onto the fenders. Compared to that big dumb grin that the mazda3 has tapered down (but will never live down), the tiguan bears a forced stretched smile. The 14 leds at the corners of the smile are daytime running lights, and look cool. under the bumper there's a honeycombed opening in the fascia, and beneath that a gray panel like a skid plate, with three more openings. Integrated into the new bumper at each side are honeycomb panels housing foglamps. Volkswagen calls it a tough new look for the urban jungle, forgetting that the days of the hummer are over. the tiguan sel features bi-xenon headlamps and 10-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels that can also be found on the high-performance golf r. interiorwe love the clarity and simplicity of the tiguan se's touch-screen display and controls! Consumer reports doesn't like the touch screen. Consumer reports usually get it right, but in this case we think they got it wrong. Bluetooth is standard. interior trim is soft plastic and faux brushed metal. The doors open wide for easy ingress and egress. There's only fair headroom and legroom for five adults, however. The cargo-carrying options of a 40/20/40 are many. There's a modest 23. 8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat; more if the rear seats are slid forward by their adjustable six inches. cargo space with the seats folded flat is 56. 1 cubic feet, which is a bit light compared to the competition. At an event called mudfest, held by the northwest automotive press association, the tiguan got beat by the winning mazda cx5 in the. Excepting the engine, it has all of the engineering and most of the amenities of the other models. however that engine is somewhat archaic, so a better value is the 2011 jetta se for $18,195, which brings the five-cylinder 2. 5-liter engine making 170 horsepower and 177 pounds of torque, while getting the same 26 mpg. the 2011 jetta tdi, $22,995, uses the latest turbodiesel direct-injected engine, making 140 horsepower with a useful 236 pounds of torque, while getting about 30 city/42 highway mpg. in order to get the price down, volkswagen has reverted to some less expensive engineering, such as a rear torsion beam suspension and drum brakes in s and se models, but a multi-link suspension and rear discs aren't missed. The trim is tasteful, and the standard cloth seats fit well, while the optional v-tex leatherette upholstery passes easily for real leather. The gauges are pretty, the convenience with such things as cupholders and storage spaces is high. Headroom and rear legroom are outstanding, nearly as much as a bmw 7 series. Handsome instruments with clean white-on-black numbering are pleasing. the overall build quality is impressive; the jetta is quiet at speed and feels solid, like it's 100,000 miles away from its first rattle. the five-cylinder, 20-valve 2. 5-liter engine is a volkswagen stalwart, and with 170 horsepower and 177 pounds-feet of torque, it provides good power for the needs of the car. It accelerates from zero to 60 in 8. 5 seconds with the 6-speed automatic, and powers the jetta to a top speed of 127 mph, so there's plenty in reserve. We much prefer the automatic, because the transmission is so good, and not the sport suspension, because the standard suspension has just the right amount of firmness; when we drove it in a sporty manner it was firm enough. We used it in city driving, where it responded crisply to the san francisco hills; and in slow-and-go freeway traffic, where it kept the transmission in 3rd gear rather than upshifting/downshifting all the time. The tdi navigation 24,195) adds navigation, keyless access, foglamps, chrome trim and rear disc brakes. safety features on all jetta models includes six airbags, anti-lock brakes (abs), electronic stability control, and the mandated tire monitor. walkaroundcompletely redesigned, the 2011 volkswagen jetta is 3 inches longer than the previous-generation models, with a wider track. the 2011 jetta is considerably more shapely than before with curves that are subtle and sweet. The shape stands out in white, and appears most elegant in that color, prettier than the black and silver sels that we tested. It is, and it shines on the new jetta. Even the new grille is anti-chrome, with black horizontal bars that look good in basic black, as well as a tray-shaped front spoiler under the front bumper that suggests the splitter on a racing car. It's an upscale improvement over the previous jetta's bigger mouth. nowhere is the new jetta overstyled or oversculpted; vw has it over bmw in that area. The lines are expanded and more graceful, while still being totally jetta. They are crisp and precise, with strong wheelwells, smooth roofline and attractive c pillar. The new nose and shoulders, viewed from the side of the car looking forward, give the front end an attractive infiniti-like roundness. at the rear, there's a neat aerodynamic lip at the trailing edge of the remote-opening trunk, and powerful taillights. interiorinside, we found little to fault. Volkswagen has de-contented the interior to reduce costs. The content that was dropped won't be greatly missed, replaced by materials still of high quality. True it's less plush than before, in order to drop the price and compete with toyota corolla and honda civic, but it's clean and stylish and comfortable, while being intelligent, accommodating, and functional. The v-tex leatherette upholstery in the jetta sel we drove sure looked like leather to us. We tested the all-new 2011 scion tc the same week as the jetta, and it felt comparatively cheap inside. volkswagen has nailed all the small creature comforts that matter. Comfortable driver armrests, convenient cupholders, good door pockets and grab handles: check, check, check, check. It's not easy to fit all those things between bucket seats in a small car, and it took detailed work by vw engineers to succeed, not by accident. The interior reflects that kind of thought. Other things, like small stylish three-finger door handles, that work. there's good headroom front and rear, and lots of rear seat legroom, first-in-class 38. 1 inches; compare that to the 38. 4 inches in a bmw 7 series. The wheelbase is stretched 2 inches, but engineers found 2. 7 more inches of legroom; with no sacrifices, it's win, win, win: ride, safety, room. The nameless icons had us stumped, at first; and the voice command doesn't name the upcoming street on which to turn, instead saying things like turn right at the second street ahead, which leaves wide room for confusion especially as the distance varies. We liked the ability to tune the radio with a knob. The driver information display is located neatly between the tachometer and speedometer, and is easy to scan: clock, fuel mileage, range, odo, thermometer. Clean climate controls. Optional rear seat pass-through with two cupholders in the armrest that folds down, to access a 15. 5-cubic-foot trunk with remote release. driving impressionthere were no jetta s models available to drive at the press launch, so we can't comment on the 2. 0-liter engine, other than to say it's been around in the jetta for a long time. Or hell's revenge. introductionwe weren't surprised to find refinement inside the comfortable cabin of the 2004 volkswagen touareg. After all, we expect refinement in a volkswagen, known for tautly finished interiors and keen attention to detail. What surprised and impressed us about the touareg was its stellar off-road capability. It turns out a volkswagen touareg can go pretty much anywhere. we witnessed this while driving through hell's revenge, a trail that weaves through sandy gullies and the not so slick rock near moab, utah. With its articulate suspension, sophisticated drive system, and advanced technology, the touareg gains the respect, if not the appreciation, of veteran off-road enthusiasts. In spite of this and in spite of its newness, it is instantly recognized as a volkswagen. Touareg boasts a brawny stance, yet shares styling cues with the upcoming phaeton luxury car and other future volkswagen models that give it a sophisticated, upscale appearance. the optional v8 engine, lifted from the superb new audi a8 l, delivers good acceleration performance, enhanced by a wonderful six-speed automatic transmission that smoothly selects exactly the right gearing for every situation. On the highway, the touareg provides a fairly smooth ride, though opting for the 19-inch wheels brings in some road vibration and noise. Touareg is no sports sedan, but handling is responsive for a heavy suv. Indeed, this is among the most comfortable of volkswagens with firm, supportive seats. measured more broadly, the touareg is among the best of the mid-size luxury suvs. What the touareg does not offer, however, is a third row of seats. The 3. 2-liter v6 is rated 220 horsepower, while the 4. 2-liter v8 boasts 310 horsepower. the v6 touareg comes standard with leatherette upholstery, eight-way adjustable seating, wood trim, power glass sunroof, dual-zone climatronic temperature control with rear seat controls, six-speed automatic transmission with tiptronic, multi-function leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic rain-sensor window wipers, 17-inch alloy wheels and many more items. Leather is optional. the v8 touareg comes standard with full leather 12-way power adjustable seating, 18-inch alloy wheels, and more luxury features. both feature a sophisticated permanent all-wheel-drive system with an electronic stability program (esp), adaptive torque distribution, a set of low-range gears, a locking center differential, and automatic hill-decent control. A locking rear differential 550) is available for both models. The system can also be controlled manually, raising the ride height for driving off road, lowering for high speeds, or kneeling down to let less-agile passengers in and out. options for both models include high-intensity discharge headlamps 750) and an electronic park assist 600), a useful system that alerts the driver to objects (or, sometimes, children) behind the car when backing up. Most important to safety are seat belts, which should always be worn, and touareg comes with three-point belts for all passengers including the rear-center position; the front belts are equipped with force-limiters to reduce injuries, while the rear belts have tensioners to enhance their effectiveness. walkaroundthe 2004 touareg looks like a volkswagen with its smooth, arched surfaces. It has a volkswagen face and rear end. Other volkswagen cues can be seen in the jeweled headlamps, the design of the hood and other features. If that isn't enough, the prominent vw badges leave no doubt. touareg looks brawny, though its true off-road capability isn't readily apparent. Its exterior styling is designed to make it look rugged yet refined, practical yet stylish. Its high ground clearance, large wheels, and the robust design of the wheel arches and bumpers are clues to its trail worthiness. Big air intakes in the lower bumper contrast with the upper radiator grille, which is shaped like that of a modern passenger car, contrast that hints at the touareg's dual role as off-road vehicle and luxury car. In the same theme, smooth, elegant surfaces above the beltline contrast with broad, rugged-looking side sills. Big exterior door handles look functional and are well designed and easy to grab. touareg is built on a unit-body chassis, like a car. It was designed to be a highly rigid structure (40 hz), so that it won't bend or twist even in the most tortuous off-road driving conditions. We were able to open and close the doors when the touareg was teetering on two or three wheels, an impressive feat considering volkswagen's tight fitment of body panels. This rigidity contributes to the touareg's ride comfort and high-speed stability. The doors are completely sealed when closed, providing a quiet cabin and allowing the touareg to ford up to 22 inches of standing water. like many suvs, the touareg features a two-stage rear hatch with a glass window that can be raised separately. It has a neat feature that many owners may never discover: the glass hatch can be hard for shorter people to reach when it's open. If this happens, simply raise the rear door. When they reconnect, the window clicks into the door. Rejoined as one unit, the hatch can then be closed as one unit. We were impressed with it when we first saw it at the north american international auto show at detroit, and volkswagen's craftsmanship in wood and leather impressed us again when we examined various models in detail. The interior elegantly combines robust dimensions with delicate details. those delicate details include rich materials: genuine burled walnut wood trim is standard, with vavona or myrtle wood available as an upgrade on the v8. We like both grades of leather, cricket and smooth nappa. Volkswagen officials were enthusiastic about the leatherette (vinyl) that's standard, but we have not seen it. The premium light-colored wood with tan leather is particularly attractive and the dark-colored wood is quite nice. The dash, door panels and other trim offer textures that appeal to the sense of touch. Chrome and brushed aluminum trim add elegance with a hint of technology. Everything seems perfectly tailored and fitted. the seats are excellent, supportive and comfortable, much better than most. I've found it sometimes takes time to get comfortable in some volkswagen seats, but i was immediately comfortable in the touareg. Larger derrieres may find the seats narrow, but they're wider than those in, say, a land rover discovery. visibility from the driver's seat is quite good, aided rearward by huge outside mirrors. All controls are easy to reach. The steering column tilts and telescopes manually; optional power adjustments make it easier to fine-tune the adjustments. The switchgear, climate control, audio controls, window lifts all feel smooth and sophisticated. Move the turn signal lever momentarily and the signals flash three times, handy for lane changes. Instruments are attractive and easy to read, big and clearly marked, using white-on-black graphics. robust climate controls make adjusting temperature quick and easy.
