2008 dodge ram pickup 2500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Mega cab, ram 2500, ram 3500, power wagon. introductionthe current generation of dodge ram heavy-duty pickups has been with us for a few years now. Last redesigned for 2003, the dodge ram 2500 and dodge ram 3500 models aren't nearly as new as the latest from ford and general motors. However, they do benefit from some recent freshening such as the diesel and six-speed automatic that were added last year. for 2008, dodge ram heavy-duty line gets a new model, the sxt which slots between the st and slt lines. Also updated are woodgrain trim (dark maple burl), electric-switch 4wd on slt and higher trim, tire pressure monitors on single-rear wheel models, and a slight increase in maximum weight for the largest models. the dodge ram mega cab was launched as a 2006 model. Mega cab is built on the heavy duty chassis and comes fitted with the hemi engine. The extra-large mega cab was created by re-proportioning the relationship between cab and bed on a long wheelbase truck, adding 20 inches to the cab and shortening the bed to 6 feet, three inches. the result is acres of cab space, with six seats and plenty of head, shoulder, leg and hip room. The mega cab is aptly named. The back seats are roomy and comfortable with reclining seatbacks, separate rear heating and air conditioning outlets, reading lights and a center armrest with cup holders, and available dvd entertainment. There's space behind the back seats for cargo. Folding down the back seats reveals a huge cargo area (more than 70 cubic feet) with a flat load floor. The rear doors open big and wide, making it easy to load stuff inside. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor in order to trigger the air bag on the side where impact occurs. from the driver's seat, the view is of a wide center stack with large knobs and buttons, precisely finished with consistent angles and cut lines throughout. The instrument panel cluster is located under a prominent dash brow to reduce glare and improve visibility of six white-faced gauges, the latter numbered on diesel-engine models. Rectangular, slat-type air vents close flush. interior trim is markedly different among the trim levels. In st trim, the dash is textured plastic with synthetic-look inserts on the slt. The laramie package makes extensive use of woodgrain trim inside, with less plastic, for a more distinctive appearance. the seats are generously padded and we found them to be comfortable, especially the six-way driver's seat in the laramie, which can be shifted around as any particular position becomes tiresome on long trips. Redesigned and re-engineered for 2009. introductionthe 2009 dodge ram is a new truck that incorporates dodge's forward-thinking style and refinements to cosmetics and engineering. The dodge ram is a light-duty full-size pickup, a so-called half-ton truck, but this latest version lacks the 1500 badge of previous versions because the heavy-duty versions (2500, 3500) share little in appearance and running gear. technically the truck is not all new. The v6 and 4. 7-liter v8 engines (overhauled recently), the brake system (upgraded), and transmissions have not been substantially changed for the 2009 model year. In a few cases, such as the front suspension geometry and the forward frame sections, the design remained but new materials are being used for more strength, less weight, or both. Some audio and climate control systems, and the middle front row seat may appear familiar, too. But that's where any similarities between the 2008 and 2009 models end. the bodywork is all new and more aerodynamic. A crew cab model has been added to the mix; it has more cabin space than the quad cab but in more manageable dimensions than the retired mega cab. The new crew cab required its own pickup bed, dubbed rambox: a perfect rectangle inside, it sports a pair of lockable bins along the bed sides, but can carry the standard 4x8-foot sheet flat on the bed floor. interiors have been given new styles and materials, new center console with shifter for some models, and new amenities and gadgets. The illusion comes from more sheetmetal and smaller gaps. for the last 15 years rams have had lots of space between tires and fenders but the '09 narrows the gap. Side panels have increased in height by nearly 3. 5 inches, to close the crevasse between the truck and the ground, yet the approach angle critical to pickup use hasn't diminished. The split between cab and bed is narrower, and there's a lateral seal in it to reduce air turbulence, the side mirrors stand off from the door glass, the sides are flatter, and the tailgate spoiler and windshield are both rounder for improved aerodynamics. Seen from behind where the tires appear almost flush with the body panels, the truck looks quite trim, rather like a european-cut dress shirt as opposed to an american-cut shirt. there is no large seam between the front bumper and the grille and lights, and if the truck does not have fog lights the bumper does not have the outline marks that show it's missing something. The rear bumper is larger, has half-round openings for the sport exhaust on trucks so equipped, and both 7- and 4-pin trailer plugs are fitted adjacent to the rear plate. On upper variants the mirrors have led puddle lamps and the headlamps are dual-bulb units, the first since the mid-'90s sport models, and on the 2009 sport the front bumper is deeper and body-colored. The rambox of crew cab models has a perfectly rectangular interior with no wheel-well intrusions. The crew cab rambox is 49 inches wide, ensuring it can carry the ubiquitous 4x8 building materials flat on the floor. Side rails with cleats secure the cargo, and a bed divider that locks into place segments the bed into smaller areas or can be flipped over and used as a bed extender with the tailgate down. along the sides of the rambox are two locking bins, capable of holding 120 standard 12-ounce cans on the left side (where the fuel fill is) and 130 on the right. An integrated air dam improves engine cooling and air conditioner performance. standard bed length is 6 feet, 3 inches, but an 8-foot bed is now available for both cab styles. That's a bit much when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. interiorram interiors are completely redesigned for 2002. In fact, one of the biggest improvements offered by the new ram is in the area of comfort. that comfort starts with roominess. To increase roominess, dodge stole 3 inches out of the bed and added more than 3 inches to the cab. The optional leather seats are also comfortable and supportive during long drives. Three-point shoulder belts are used at all locations, including the rear center seat. A big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. White-faced instruments with turquoise numbers look sporty and trendy, but don't offer the legibility of traditional white-on-black designs, particularly at dusk. At night, the instruments are nicely illuminated in green. the design of the audio system could be improved for ease of use. Setting a button for a station, for example, requires pressing a separate set button, rather than just holding the button down. Sliding bass and treble controls are harder to adjust than knobs when bouncing around in a pickup truck. Optional steering wheel audio controls 75) solve this with brilliantly designed buttons behind the steering wheel that are much easier to use than the awkward steering wheel controls found on gm's full-size trucks. Likewise, cruise controls on the steering wheel are easy to operate. otherwise, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls, somewhat similar to what's found in volkswagens, gives the center dash a nice look and feel. Just below the hvac controls is a slot lined with a rubber mat that's perfect for a wallet or other small items. A big panel below that folds down with adjustable cup holders. Overhead is a console with an effective pair of map lights, a trip computer, a compartment for sunglasses, and a compass, which every self-respecting truck should have. regular cab models come fitted with a tray behind the seats big enough to hold a large bucket. Dodge even supplies the bucket, a tray designed to carry tools and such. There's even a hook just to the right of the center dash that's useful for hanging onto a couple of grocery bags; the brits call these curry hooks. the new quad cab is quite nice. It's easy to see why. The rear seat is roomy, with enough rake to the seatback to make it comfortable for two adults. Its size also makes the rear bench seat suitable for child safety seats. Adjustable pedals are usually offered only with an automatic transmission, but for 2003 dodge has made them available on manual-shift pickups as well. Just below the hvac controls is a slot lined with a rubber mat that's perfect for a wallet or other small items. A big panel below that folds down with adjustable cup holder.
